About Julie

Hi, I’m Julie Shum and I have been a music teacher for 25 wonderful years.
I earned a BFA in Music Theatre at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois in 1997 and remained in Illinois as a music teacher until 2002 when I moved with my partner of now 27 years to Birmingham, AL so he could take a position as a programmer analyst at UAB.
I have taught music in the metro Birmingham, AL area since 2003. It is my great joy to have taught many hundreds of little children, hundreds of youth and teens, and many adults!
I teach classes and private lessons at the beginner and intermediate levels in Piano, Guitar, Recorder, Ukulele, Dulcimer, and Fiddle/Mandolin for conservatories, music schools, and non-profits.
I teach voice at an advanced level.  I have directed several school and church choirs. I have helped prepare voice students for auditions at the college level, as well as for pageants, and community theater auditions. I enjoy coaching vocalists for rock bands.
I have taught for the Conservatory of Central Illinois, the Springer Center for the Arts in Champaign, IL, the Conservatory of Birmingham-Southern, Community Education South of Birmingham, Scrollworks Music School and the Metropolitan Youth Orchestras of Central Alabama, Highlands United Methodist, Grace Covenant Church, and Mason Music.
I am also co/founder and Executive Director of East Village Arts of Birmingham, AL.
If you are looking for a fun, patient, easy-going teacher who can nerd-out about music endlessly for private or small group lessons who also has extensive online teaching experience, look no further!
