Julie’s background and experience

2020 to 2023: co-founded and am now the Executive Director of East Village Arts of Birmingham, a non-profit artist collective. Built website, established Patreon and Venmo accounts, filed for 501c3. 

2017 to 2023: Voice, Piano, Guitar, and Flute Teacher for Mason Music. Current studio of 30+ students. Piano Teacher Team Leader offering ongoing support and resources to Piano team as well as running assessments of possible new hires. 

2009 to 2021 : Choir Director and Piano, Voice, and Flute teacher at Scrollworks/Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, located in the Civil Rights District of Birmingham, AL. Trainer for young teachers in early childhood music classes, music theory, and choir direction. Switched from paid employee to volunteer in January 2019.

July 2015 to September 2017: Director of Religious Education at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Birmingham, AL. Director of children’s programs, with an enrollment of 65 children. Managed 27 volunteers and 6 paid caregivers. Directed the planning and scheduling of children’s religious education classes, for children ages birth to 18. Worked in covenant with the board and many committees to coordinate children’s programming during services and in classes. Planned and executed several worship services per year.

2015-2016: Represented UUCB on the Magic City Acceptance Project’s Conference of Faiths Committee, planning a two day seminar aimed at providing education and resources to local faith leaders interested in supporting congregants who identify as LGBTQ. In charge of worship services both days.

2014-2015: Representing member from Scrollworks to GBMEA (Greater Birmingham Music Educators Alliance) assisting in the organization of the GBMEA Annual Festival Concert at Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center.

2006-2009: General music teacher at the Alabama Waldorf School, grades 1 – 8. Choir and instrumental ensemble director. Served as teacher representative to School Board.

2004 – 2006 Assistant Manager at Daily Cup Coffee in Mountain Brook.

2005-2015: Provided music appreciation experiences for children in Special Needs classes in Birmingham Public City Schools, funded by Community Education South.

2003-2009: Teacher for Community Education South. Private voice and piano.

2002 – 2003  Served as Secretary/Treasurer for Birmingham Arts Association

2002-2004: Voice teacher at the Conservatory of Music at Birmingham-Southern College.

1999-2002: Voice teacher and director of children’s music programming at the Conservatory of Central Illinois. Director of summer music theatre program with 35+ children and staff.
1998-2001: Arcola Community Music Theatre, director of several large productions, with full cast and staff.
